Full Interview – Jason Beaird

Here is the full interview with Jason Beaird that we featured a few minutes from in our last video podcast episode. He was here in the studio to talk about his book Principles of Beautiful Web Design which was recently reworked for it’s 2nd edition.

Why he wrote the book

Principles of Beautiful Web Design was originally intended for developers who were looking to learn more about design, turns out that has struck a chord with anyone looking to learn more about the subject and it’s become one of the top selling Site Point books released. I use the book myself for both web 101 & 201 respectively for an intro to web design sort of class structure and it works really well for that.

Structure

Jason structured the book around 5 basic design principles; Layout, Color, Texture, Typography and Imagery. Using those building blocks as the basis for the design education you receive from the book when you’re done with it makes it extremely easy to digest. You won’t find it to be overly intense but you will find it very design process centric and it will make a lot of sense even if you’re not entirely initiated into design speak.

Southern Savers Case Study

We discussed the main case study website southernsavers.com he used to show examples of how to execute a great design. He really wanted to raise the level of all the sample websites in the book and I think he did, especially in this case.
