This week we talk about three sites, WebMynd, We Bleed Design and ADII Rockstar. In addition to the design, we discuss the usefulness (or detriment) of having visitors come to your site for reasons unrelated to the actual content of your site.

Hey Gene and Jay, I’m the designer of that WebMynd site — found this podcast when searching Twitter. I thought your analysis was really good. I put some extra work into the site just because it was a chance to make something cool and visible, and because I don’t design that many traditional websites these days so when I do I try to get all my stored-up ideas out at once.
Like you guys, I’m still not sure how much of an effect an interesting, er, effect can have on casual users in the general case, but at WebMynd we did notice an increase in downloads from the new website (and the old one wasn’t bad). There were confounding factors though — the install button was moved and made a different color, and the content changed a bit — so it’s hard to know what was really responsible.
Anyway, I’m glad to have made something that became a topic of discussion. I’ll check out your future podcasts, keep it up.
Thanks Imran and thanks for giving us something truly great to look at and talk about. We love it when people push the boundaries of web design and you certainly did.
It’s also interesting to get more info from you about the results on the business behind the website, and uptick in downloads sounds like you were successful in the design to me!
Go Adii! I agree, his site is different, visually interesting, but very easy to read. The other sites have that issue that drives me crazy … the white text on the black background! We Bleed Design could use some larger fonts for better readability as well, and WebMynd just has some confusing marketing messaging. They are entertaining though.
Sexy sexy websites! I cant wait till I stumble across my own innovative design and re build my website.
While I see where you’re coming from with the analysis of the effect, we have to remember that we are designers and developers. When we go to a designer’s website, we are focused on how everything is laid out, what we like and dislike about the actual design of the website.
When a client is discovering designers, most of the time they’re relatively ignorant about what to look for in a designer. So they may stumble across 9 pretty cool looking blog type websites, with the 10th one being webleeddesign.com, but which one do you think they will remember? That’s really what counts.
