David Kaneda: Sencha Touch & jQTouch

While at our ConvergeSE 2011 conference David Kaneda (@davidkaneda) and pepper him with questions about Sencha and what he did with jQTouch.

Sencha & Sencha Touch

David is currently the creative director at Sencha. A role he just sort of claimed and took on when he got there. After he created jQTouch Sencha noticed him and invited him to join their company.

jQTouch is a jQuery plugin for mobile web development on the iPhone, Android, iPod Touch, and other forward-thinking devices.

Once at Sencha they began working on the next iteration basically of what jQTouch was looking to do and thus Sencha Touch was born:

Sencha Touch allows you to develop mobile web apps that look and feel native on iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry touch devices. For more on Sencha Touch check it out here.

The coolest thing about Sencha is that they’ve created Sencha Labs which is a home for all the various open source projects the team has created. So each of those projects, like jQTouch is still currently maintained and active. Which is freaking awesome.

I tried to get David to spill the beans on some upcoming plans for Sencha Touch but he wouldn’t let us in on it. Boo! Maybe next time.

This is a great conference. I’d really like to hear a talk centered around *designing* for cross-platform apps.

I would second @JD’s push to make sure that the UX and UI design for apps across devices is hit upon… not just overviews of the frameworks. It’s certainly a different experience. Hoping that Jenifer Hanen’s talk really nails it.

Side Note: the UMS backdrop is great.

jqTouch is still actively maintained? Hard to believe since the Getting Started page says that it uses jQuery 1.4.2.

There’s a git commit showing that an update to use jQuery 1.6 was reverted back in May, and nothing’s happened since. Am I missing something?
