Mosso: Not Quite Ready for Prime Time

I wrote back in February that I was looking for a new web host. My current host, Mosso, seemed “to be cratering under its own weight, and I now believe it’s more likely that the problems will get worse before they get better.” Well, I was right. We’re now almost four months into the problems, and we still have some sort of significant issue virtually every day (downtime, email delays, email bounces, etc.). Mosso is an outstanding concept, but they’re apparently running into major scalability issues.

Not surprisingly, finding a replacement was painful. Despite all the great comments on that first post (thank you!), I took for granted what an outstanding setup Mosso is. It’s killing me to have to leave them, but it’s worse having to suffer through the problems day after day.

Thanks to the web hosting reviews at Web Host Magazine, though, I found LiquidWeb. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Getting up and running on my own Linux Virtual Private Server has been daunting, to say the least, but LiquidWeb support is phenomenal and very fast — just as fast as my web site performance now. That has made me comfortable enough to start moving all my sites over this week. It’ll take awhile to get everything moved, but I’m very optimistic that LiquidWeb will be a good home for a long time.

I’d definitely recommend them if you’re looking.

    As I write this Mosso has killed the BD on my site because it was “one of the accounts bringing down a MySql cluster”.

    They didn’t email/call me and I can’t get even a DB backup for maybe 24 hrs.

    Absolutely appalling.

    I now have no WordPress on my site, hence no blog, hence nothing.

    I also do not have the means to download a backup of the DB to take my site to another host.

    It couldn’t be a more pathetic situation.

    You can count in hours how much longer I’m at Mosso.

    SO SO SO disappointed.

    Yep, Mosso is the worst, It took them like 2 days to setup my account, then when I went to setup my first site, nope — broken, then it took them like a week to get that fixed. I then tried to setup my second site, guess what, broken still… Not to mention I setup pingdom to monitor the sites I setup with them and the uptime was about 85%….

    Rich. my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. One of the other downsides with Mosso is that I usually don’t get emails from WordPress 🙁

    So far, I have been really happy with Liquid Web. The control panel is far more overwhelming than Mosso’s, but their service works very well, and their support is phenomenal. I would still highly recommend them. Virtually all my sites are there now.

    Mosso has been great for us so far. WordPress probably didn’t send email because the SMTP option was chosen, not just Sendmail. And their up-time has been fine. However, there was a recent problem with a MySQL breakdown. Probably because they’re too flexible and let a user install something that crashed the system. Still, they should watch for that. Now I monitor the System Status page daily: http://status.mosso.com/

    MT4 runs like a dream, and the option to use BOTH ASP and PHP on the same Web site is very helpful– especially when testing all my client’s Web sites built in various server-side languages locally. I’d have to use a friend’s Windows account before.

    Many hosting companies don’t publish information like this, just let it slip through the cracks and deal with customers individually.

    If anyone is interested in sharing the cost of Mosso with me, I’d be willing to set you up with one (or a few if needed) of the client accounts for a good price. Just need a few people to help offset my costs. I’m thinking $10 for me, plus the set fees at Mosso (for example, $5 for 100mb of MS SQL, etc). I can be flexible with price depending on what you’re looking for. I’m willing to set you up with unlimited email boxes and databases, since they’re free anyway!
