Smallstudio.com.au is amazing. The depth and breadth of their aesthetic is pretty much incredible. The complex structure of the design is well balanced by the lushly varied art. Its almost a collage style that somewhat reminds me of Max Erst’s Une Semaine De Bonte, probably because of the seamless integration of multiple vintage illustrations (I’m assuming they are vintage; if they are original then they are perfectly crafted to resemble the pulp style). The synthesis of strong graphic vector work, lavish illustration and tight typography never feels awkward or disjoint. While the design is highly energetic and active, a strong sense of ‘pages’ and modular structure keep it grounded and scannable, though I must say it rides that line to the edge.

Listen to me, I’m gushing… enough of that, lets just say I think its truly great.

Sadly, its not responsive, which is understandable (I mean, how in could it be?), but a mobile site replaces this image heavy beast for smart phones and the site looks pretty darn good as is on the iPad. Love it…
