Each week, we do a round up of curated “stuff from the interwebs” that we call Radar.

In this week’s 158th Radar:

ESPN’s Tony Romo Post
Couldn’t track back in Twitter which one of our friends pointed out the cool scrolling effect.. but it’s probably better than Romo’s future career… just a guess.

Terrible UX Trends for 2017
Pay attention, these are going to take over the UX universe.

4 Ways I’ve F’d up as a Designer
You are still free to f up any way you like, but at least you can now avoid the exact same ways I’ve f’d up.

Material Design and the Mystery Meat Navigation Problem
In March 2016, Google updated Material Design to add bottom navigation bars to its UI library. This new bar is positioned at the bottom of an app, and contains 3 to 5 icons that allow users to navigate between top-level views in an app. Sound familiar? That’s because bottom navigation bars have been a part of iOS’s UI library for years (they’re called tab bars in iOS).

Mobile-First Is Just Not Good Enough: Meet Journey-Driven Design
In a recent sales meeting for a prospective healthcare client, our team at Mad*Pow found ourselves answering an all-too-familiar question. We had covered the fundamental approach of user-centered design, agreed on leading with research and strategy, and everything was going smoothly. Just as we were wrapping up, the head of their team suddenly asked, “Oh, you guys design mobile-first, right?” Well, that’s a difficult question to answer.

5 ways to use personas in your projects
I often think of posters when I think of personas. This is probably because posters seem to be the natural vehicle for sharing personas. The two go together as naturally as Strawberries and Cream, or Gin and Tonic. Teams spend a great deal of time and effort creating personas, and then stick up some persona posters in the office (like the excellent examples from MailChimp above) with the expectation that suddenly the whole organization will start talking about ‘the users’. I’m not saying that doing this isn’t a great idea, it usually is, but there’s so much more that you can do with your personas than just creating some nice posters to help brighten up the office. So with this in mind, here are 5 additional ways that you put your personas to work in your projects.

Foggy thinking in design (and how to cut through it)
As designers we’ve all used foggy sentences like these: “The screen was a little confusing so we moved the layout around.” They sound meaningful but they don’t point to specific trade-offs or product attributes. They’re dressed up ways of saying “I like this better.” What actually makes it easier, or what specifically is confusing about it? Here are some examples of the questions you can use to cut through the fog.

The UX Audit: A Beginner’s Guide
Imagine you run an eCommerce website. You know that visitors find you in search engines and that they interact with your homepage. They even get started on your checkout process. But at some point, they do not convert. And you do not know why. It might be time to update the information hierarchy. Or the user flows. But how do you know what needs rejigging and what does not?
