About the Show

This is BizCraft, the podcast about the business side of web design, recorded live almost every two weeks. Your hosts are Carl Smith (@carlsmith) of nGen Works and Gene Crawford (@genecrawford) of UnmatchedStyle.

Episode Overview

We talked about:

Carl’s trip to Romania. Sort of uneventful. Bleh…

The Art of Negotiating:
Understand what you need out of the negotiation. Focus on that exclusively.
Be prepared and ok with walking away. Research what it means if you don’t get the deal.
Focus on interests not positions.
Work with the other party to solve the problem of the negotiation together.
Ask them about their position. What do they need. Explain your interests and what you need.
Separate people from the problem.
Realize that a negotiation is more like a game of frisbee than a game of chess.
There isn’t a winner and a loser.
Just two parties trying to accomplish something together.

Carl mentioned this book: Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

Reminds Gene of Carl:
How To Break All The Rules And Get Everything You Want

It seems small, but we broke all the rules and had a fun time. The key is that we were simply nice to everyone and didn’t
argue and were very thankful at everything we got to do.

If you act like the river, you ultimately flow past all the rocks along the way.

The abundance of slowness
Learning to value smart work over hard work requires a paradigm shift, but pays dividends.

At Peleg’s firm, they weren’t saving lives or fighting wars. It was a service firm, and they lived accordingly.
His team was in the office from 9–6 Monday through Thursday, and 9–2 on Fridays. They set realistic expectations for their clients and met deadlines. The business thrived. But they didn’t answer the phone at night, and were unavailable on weekends. Peleg’s team had clear boundaries, made them known, and their clients were happy.

They worked when they were rested and present. The quality of their output spoke for itself.

Beers from the end of the show

Gene: Game of Thrones – Ommegang Black (Stout)
Carl: Nuthin’ – he’s getting healthy or some crap…
