Kimthemovie.com is a site promoting and featuring a movie about domestic violence. It seems to have an educational motive which is cool, though it took me a minute to understand what I was looking at. As you can see by the thumbnail the site feels way off kilter, which makes sense given the content. It’s textural and gritty with muted oranges and black. The combination of elements relates (at least viscerally) to the story.

The site is a single page scroller with lots of space in between ‘pages’. It makes for a soft transition between content but there are places where I’m basically staring at a black screen. This kept me from scrolling all the way to the bottom of the site. The site definitely sets a tone and makes me curious about the video, which is its intended purpose. It has some strangeness to it that is intended and some that is not intended. For instance, the large buttons in the center of the ‘home page’ have almost no hover state and when I loaded the page the news feed showed nothing. This made me thing that word ‘news’ was an unstyled link.

The site has a lot going for it, though. Through the use of basic image replacement, kimthemovie.com has broken away from the boxed in feel of most sites and uses the content elements to set the stage for the movie and to create interest. In that way, it is very successful.
