I can’t recall where I saw this description for the map design from first (if it’s you please let us know in the comments below) but I it sums it up perfectly:

Awesome interactive travel map for Belize. Featuring three levels of zoom with css animations, jQuery photo sliders, parallax scrolling and more.

AND – STRATEGICALLY – They have figured out an interesting way to weave a narrative that guides you from specific US departure cities, to Belize (and thus the resort), emphasizing the fairly minimal travel distance, and close proximity of things to do while staying there.
