Chatting with Neil Patel of KissMetrics

I’m a big fan of using CrazyEgg on my website projects, typically early on in the re-design process. It’s probably the fastest way to collect highly valuable information on what’s working in a website design or showing you what you need to improve. So when I found out the guys behind that were working on a new product called KissMetrics I knew it would be something big. I asked Neil Patel (@neilpatel) if he would chat with me about his new company/product and tell me all about it. Neil Patel cofounder of KissMetrics & CrazyEgg is one of the coolest and well known for being quite generous with his knowledge about how to market and sell products online.

KissMetrics is a new web analytics program that zeros in on the conversion, not just duplicating the hard stuff that will take some customization work in Google Analytics, but really more so. Neil says leveraging what they learned while building and selling CrazyEgg to create KissMetrics is really what lead them to focus on a product focusing on conversion tracking.

Thinking realistically about your users and how they convert to actually make a purchase (or whatever your goal is) is really much deeper than just reviewing page views each week. Neil talks about creating KissMetrics to go beyond that and look at ‘lifetime value of a user’ – how valuable is that one customer that buys products to you vs. others.

We briefly discussed KissInsights the little sister product to KissMetrics. Which let’s you get rapid feedback from users in a non-intrusive way. I talked with Hiten Shah a while back in an earlier chat session about the specific questions KissInsights (then code named survey.io) uses and it’s quite intriguing how they came about using those.

I had to ask Neil about the pricing on KissInsights, namely because of this post, given that some people think it’s too high. Neil’s answer surprised me a little, but in retrospect I should have thought that the same guys that teach you how to optimize your website’s sales funnel would use that same statistical sampling and mathematical style approach to figuring out what they should charge for their product.

Each time I talk to one of these guys from KissMetrics/CrazyEgg I learn something new, give the video your time, I’m sure you’ll get something out of what Neil has to say to us.
