About the Show

This is BizCraft, the podcast about the business side of web design, recorded live almost every two weeks. Your hosts are Carl Smith (@carlsmith) of nGen Works and Gene Crawford (@genecrawford) of UnmatchedStyle.

Episode Overview

Carl discussed “poaching” and whey people leave a job. Money, politics or just wanting to get better by going elsewhere. The ins-and-outs of what this is made of and how Carl works to stop it.

We shared a story about an incident where a client asked Gene to take less money for a project even though they’d all agreed on a set amount. Just because the client said they made a mistake and didn’t do the math correctly. (Don’t back down kids.)

Here’s the link to Aaron Draplin’s Portland Creative Mornings talk.

Questions from the kids:

Ben B: I did some work for a client without a contract (dumb i know). They owe me a large some of money and it’s been over 90 days and I cannot get them to pay. What recourse do I have? I was part of a team so I do not have control over the website files anymore.

Keaton Taylor: What would you say is the best ay to light a fire under a client’s ass on a stalled web project? I’ve talked briefly with a friend who also has this problem about sending out a letter (or an email or going to the business) offering a kill fee or letting the client know that if we haven’t moved forward with this project in the next 30 days it will be suspended indefinitely and there will be a charge to reinstate the project as active. What are your thoughts on this option, what have you done in the past?

Beers from the end of the show
